There is no consistently accurate means now in use for inspecting populated printed wiring boards. Inspection is often performed by humans looking through a microscope to discern whether each solder joint is properly joined, and that the parts are in the proper configuration. The research group is eliminating the 4-pi X-ray system's sole dependancy upon CAD data and creating an x-ray inspection station with a point-and-click interface that makes inspection less laborious, less time-consuming, and more accurate. X-ray inspection has a number of benefits for manufacturers, such as allowing inspection of Ball Grid Array packages where it is physically impossible to visually evaluate a joint that is located underneath the package. The research group is also extending x-ray inspection capabilities through the Internet where a remote computer site will be able to control the inspection. This service will allow a manufacturer of small lots to inspect a board without capital investment, transfer of personnel, or long time delays.
