Rensselaer’s department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology provides courses and programs of study that reflect the central role of chemistry in the science and technology of tomorrow.

The programs offered lead to B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry — a minor in chemistry is also available.

In addition to a strong focus in the traditional areas of chemistry — such as synthesis, molecular structure, and chemical reactions — Chemistry and Chemical Biology offers courses and research programs in the rapidly developing frontiers of modern science. These areas include biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology, materials and polymer chemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Donations: James V. Crivello Fund for UG Summer Research

Apply Now
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute would like to announce the establishment of the James V. Crivello Fund for Undergraduate Summer Research in 2015. This fund has been established in memory of Professor James V. Crivello in recognition of his many years of service at both General Electric and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to promote research excellence in the field of polymer chemistry. The fund will be used to support undergraduate students in active summer research programs on polymer chemistry at Rensselaer.

Contributions to the fund may be sent to:

Professor Richard Gross named 2015 ACS POLY Fellow

Professor Richard Gross in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is named as a 2015 ACS POLY Fellow from the Polymer Chemistry Division (POLY) of American Chemical Society (ACS).

An equivalent of .1% of POLY membership are selected from submitted nominations. Other recipients are induced including 2014 POLY Flory and IPA Awardees. This year’s selected and inducted awardees truly demonstrate excellence in all ways that POLY members advance our field of polymer science, through scientific accomplishments and service to the profession.

Awardees will be honored with a plaque during the Spring ACS National Meeting during the POLY/PMSE Award Reception on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 in Plaza Ballroom AB, Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel at 5:30 p.m. Thank you for participating in the POLY Awards series.

James Buchwald Honored for 2014 Rensselaer Founders' Award of Excellence

The Rensselaer Founders' Award of Excellence is "the highest honor of the Annual Honors Convocation ceremony." The Founders Award of Excellence was established in 1994 to honor students who embody qualities of creativity, discovery, leadership, and the values of pride and responsibility at Rensselaer. The award consists of a special certificate, recognition by faculty, staff, and peers at the Honors Convocation ceremony, and a cash prize. Approximately 70 wonderful students from the Troy and Hartford campuses about one percent of our student population are honored each year as winners of Rensselaer's Founders Award of Excellence.
