Jonathan Rankin, sophomore
I am working with Prof. Akpalu to investigate a polymer called PBI for use as a membrane in methanol fuel cells. The topic of investigation is the solution properties of this polymer. I perform viscosity measurements, and other members of the group perform light scattering experiments or employ other methods to determine the behavior of the polymer in solution, specifically its transition from solution to membrane. We hope that more understanding of what is going on will lead to ways to make membranes that perform better.
