Co-op

By participating in the co-op program, students can obtain valuable working experience that can be very helpful in choosing a career. Payment is at industrial rates. Typically, a student spends a summer and one semester on a co-op assignment. This may require a student to graduate the semester following normal graduation for his or her class, although students with advance placement or transfer credits often can complete the requirements without spending extra time by taking some additional  courses in some semesters or summers. Some schedules that then permit graduation in four years are given below.

The best time for a chemistry major to be off-campus is the first semester of the fourth year, as this is the easiest semester in which to re-arrange the required courses; the changes that are needed are given below.

In all cases, a total of  128 credit hours is required, and if this total is not achieved by the end of the fourth year, an additional semester will be required. Elective credits as well as H&SS credits required in the schedules below will depend on the number of credits earned in earlier semesters.

Students With Lots of Advance Credits

The following is a possible schedule for fourth year co-op, for students who have enough credits from advance placement, transfer or additional courses to graduate in four years:

First semester Second semester
On co-op. CHEM-4950 Senior Experience (3 credits)
CHEM-4620 Introduction to Polymer Chemistry (4 credits)
Electives (9 credits)

CHEM-4900 Senior Seminar will be waived for such students, but the credit associated with it (1 cr) must be made up elsewhere to maintain the required 128 credits for graduation.

Students Requiring an Extra Semester

Students who require an additional semester should follow the normal schedule.

If students take an earlier assignment, they must plan carefully to accommodate prerequisites. If the Fall semester of the third year is taken for the co-op assignment, the following schedule is possible.

Third Year

First semester Second semester
On co-op.

CHEM-4110 Instrumental Analysis (2 credits)

CHEM-4120 Exp Chem IV (2 credits)

Humanities or Social Science (4 credits)

Electives (8 credits)

Fourth Year

First semester Second semester
CHEM-4110 Macro Phys Chem (4 credits) CHEM-4460 Micro Phys Chem (3 credits)
CHEM-4010 Inorg Chem II (2 credits) CHEM-4620 Intro. Polymer Chem. (4 credits)
CHEM-4020 Exp. Chem III (2 credits) CHEM-4950 Senior Experience (3 credits)
CHEM-4760 Molecular Biochem (4 credits) Electives (5 credits)
CHEM- 4900 Senior Seminar (1 credit)
Humanities or Social Science (4 credits)

Students Taking Co-op Spring Semester

If the Spring semester of the third year is taken for the co-op assignment, a possible schedule is:

Third Year

First semester Second semester
Unchanged On co-op.

Fourth Year

First semester Second semester
CHEM- 4900 Senior Seminar (1 credit) CHEM-4110 Instrumental Analysis (2 credits)
CHEM-4950 Senior Experience (3 credits) CHEM-4120 Exp Chem IV (2 credits)
Humanities or Social Science (4 credits) CHEM-4460 Micro Phys Chem (3 credits)
CHEM-4620 Intro. Polymer Chem (4 credits)
Electives (4 credits)
