| Graduate Programs and Degrees
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology offers two graduate degrees the Master of Science, and the Doctor of Philosophy. The M.S. and the Ph.D. require research and a thesis.
Research, the heart of graduate study, is conducted by groups of students and postdoctoral research associates under the direction of individual faculty. During the first semester of study, graduate students are encouraged to join one of these research groups and begin their thesis research.
Research groups vary widely in size and organization, but all are characterized by close interaction and exchange of ideas between faculty and students. Faculty devote substantial time to their students not only as advisors but as active collaborators in research.
Graduate students typically begin their studies with graduate courses in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. The courses that are required depend on the student’s background, area of interest, and performance in entering placement exams.
Additionally, in consultation with the adviser, students may select a number of specialized advanced-level courses in chemistry, as well as from offerings in other departments that meet their needs. Each student plans a program with his or her adviser to meet individual professional goals.
