Brief Background and History

Hindi Translation

The real explosion of world interest happened when on the 23rd of February, 1997 World Media reported the existence of Dolly: a clone from an adult sheep. A few days later the Edinburgh scientists admitted that frozen cells had been used to make Dolly, having seemed to deny it when the story first broke. That means that mammals can be cloned after death. US scientists also revealed that they had cloned monkeys (using cells from an embryo).

"Dolly"

The British scientist responsible for Dolly admitted to a parliamentary committee (6 March 1997) that human cloning could be possible in two to three years (after vigorous denials by many embryologists). Currently intensive research is being done both in the US and the other countries of the world concerning cloning.
Although a lot of attention has been paid on the possibility and the ethics related to the cloning of human beings, cloning can be used as a great biochemical tool in providing invaluable advances in medicine and pharmacology.
