Fermentation
Experiment
This page is dedicated to those chemical engineering students
who are about to attempt the fermentation experiment. Listed below are
a few helpful hints that may prevent a couple of headaches!
Homepage for the Fermentation Experiment
Suggested Team Strategy:
-
It is easiest to split into 2 teams of two.
One team responsible for the control experiment, the other responsible
for the variable experiment.
-
Communication during the experiment is essential
to obtaining meaningful results.
-
Each team member must know what he or she is
responsible for prior to the experiment.
-
Perform both experiments simultaneously during
the laboratory session. In doing so, each team will be ready to analyze
data at the same time.
-
Make sure both the control and variable experiments
are exactly the same except
for the variable in question.
The
DO's:
-
Follow the Lab manual exactly to the "t"! The
procedures are written and explained very well.
-
Confirm the idea for the variable experiment
with Professor Bungay
before
entering the lab.
-
Clean/Replace any "dirty" equipment (i.e. tubes,
beakers) prior to performing the experiment.
-
Verify that there are enough raw materials to
perform the experiment.
-
Please-Remember
to return the yeast to the refrigerator where you found it!
-
Always remember to follow laboratory safety
procedures.
The
DONT'S:
-
Don't erase the data off the hard drive until
you've verified that it has been properly copied onto a diskette. I don't
think you want to perform the experiment twice!
-
Don't use a different carbon source other than
the one chosen for the control. It may be difficult to determine the density
of a foreign material.
-
Don't be afraid to ask the friendly lab TA about
what you are doing. They don't bite; they just salivate for questions!
