Hindered Settling is what occurs when particles are crowded and surrounding particles interfere with the motion of individual particles. Sounds technical? It's the same principle that works when you try and fit four thousand cars coming home from work on a road that can only fit about five thousand. Things tend to move fairly slow, or at least, not as fast as if there was only a few cars on the road.
