Shear stress
It may not be easy to understand how to stress a liquid. Consider two parallel plates separated by a
small gap filled with a fluid. As one plate moves relative to the other, forces act on the fluid, and the forces will depend on the rate of movement of the plate. By specifying a unit area for the plates and
the dimensions of the gap, there can be standard units for shear stress.
