Preliminary Treatment

The purpose of preliminary treatment is to condition the raw wastewater to make downstream treatment processes more effective. Foreign objects of varying size in raw wastewater are removed by a mechanical screen (to the left of the picture). Screened raw wastewater then enters the grit chamber (center of the picture). The grit chamber removes sand, gravel, coffee grounds, etc... The grit is carried to the grit collector area by the screw conveyor (to the right of the picture).
