Pump Type Construction Style Notes
Dynamic Type Pumps

Centrifugal Single stage overhung, Capacity varies with head. (horizontal) process type

Two stage overhung Used for heads above single-stage capability.

Single-stage impeller Used for high flows of 1083 ft (330 m) head. between bearings

Chemical Have low pressure and temperature ratings.

Slurry Low speed and adjustable axial clearance. Has erosion control features.

Canned Low head capacity limits when used in chemical services.

Multistage, horizontal Have moderate temperature-pressure ranges. split casing

Multistage, barrel type Used for high temperature-pressure ratings.

Centrifugal Single-stage, process Used to exploit low net positive section head (vertical) type (NPSH) requirements.

Multistage Low-cost installation.

Inline Low cost installation.

High speed High head/low flow. Moderate costs.

Sump Low cost.

Multistage, deep well Used for water well service.

Axial Propeller Vertical orientation.

Turbine Regenerative Capacity independent of head. Low flow/high head performance.

Positive Displacement Pumps

Reciprocating Piston, plunger Driven by steam engine cylinders or motors through crackcases.

Metering Diaphram and packed plunger types.

Diaphram Used for chemical slurries. Can be pneumatically or hydraulically actuated.

Rotary Screw For high-viscosity, high-flow-high-pressure services.

Gear For high-viscosity, moderate-pressure/moderate-flow services.
