Daily Maintenance
- Soil Sampling
- Disposable sample vials (40 ml)
- 5 ml methanol in first
- Take and inital weight
- Top off with methylene chloride
- Tumble overnight
- GC analysis
- Frequency taken:
- 1st week: daily
- 2nd week: every other day
- 3rd week and more: twice weekly
- Biomass Sampling
- Disposable sample vials (40 ml)
- 5-10 gram representative soil sample
- Will plate out
- Frequency taken D=0,7,14,21...
- GAC
- Preparation & setup of GAC columns
- Empty "used" GAC into disposable sample vial (40 ml)
- Fill vial with methylene chloride
- GC analysis
- Frequency of run:
- 1st 3 days: #1 and #2 twice daily
- 2nd week: #1 every other day, #2 at end of week
- 3rd week: #1 & #2 once a week
- pH
- Reusable vials
- Initial weight (empty vial)
- 5-10 gram representative soil sample
- Final weight
- Add distilled water
- Sonicate
- Test pH: ensure range of soil is between 6.5 and 7.5
- Use either NaOH or H2SO4 to neutralize
- Moisture Test
- Erlenmeyer flasks
- Take inital weight
- 5-10 gram representative soil sample
- Take final weight
- Add Teflon boiling stones
- Add 100 ml of toluene
- Distill for at least 30-45 minutes
- Frequency:
- First few days: Daily
- 1st-2nd week: Every other day
- 3rd week and more: once a week also after adding moisture
- LOD (Loss on Drying - mainly for inital soil analysis)
- Crucibles
- 5-10 gram representaive sample
- Dry in oven overnight
- More accurate
- Not as convenient as toluene distillation
- Usually performed at box start-up
- General Start-Up of New Boxes
- Determine type of soil to be treated
- Determine chemical additions (nutrients, pH adjustment, etc.)
- Determine bulking agent addition, if any (sawdust, woodchips, etc.)
- Mixing soil manually or with Processall
- Line boxes up with Teflon sheeting
- Line bottom of boxes with wire mesh and sand
- Fill boxes with soil
- Adjust air flow rate(usually between 2500-3500 ccm)
- Initial sampling
- Break-down of Treated Boxes
- Final GC sampling
- TCLP (soil extracted & specially run on GC)
- Retain a jarful of treated soil
- Clean boxes for next use
- Ask Prof. Bungay a question
- Done
