Animation of Effect of Spacing
Focus on just one covalently bound enzyme. It is vibrating, flexing, and rotating with its tether at much higher rates than shown in this animation. This motion is in three dimensions. This applet does not show the enzyme rotating on its link to the CH2 group nor does it show tilting. Nevertheless, you can appreciate how a substrate has better access to the yellow active site when there are more spacer groups.
