Surge Lagoon

The ability to divert the flow to the surge lagoon allows this particular
treatment plant to run very close to steady flow continuously. In order to
keep the surge tank from becoming anaerobic, mixing aeration equipment has been
installed. This can be seen in the above picture. The pump forces the
sewage to travel through the air allowing oxygen to diffuse into the sewage.
When teh sewage hits the water surface it creates turbulence providing the
mixing. This combined with the minimal industrial waste treated by the
plant, means that secondary treatment variables, like Return Activated Sludge
(RAS) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO), are less likely to need adjustment. When
the flow peaks during the late morning and early afternoon hours it is diverted
to the surge lagoon (capacity of 720,000 gallons) and is later either fed
back through the primary clarifiers or right to the aeration tanks when the
flow begins to diminish. .
