Lagoons

The lagoons are left over from when the plant used them as the only treatment
for it's sewage. The raw sewage was sent into the lined lagoons and whatever
didn't settle was discharged. Now these lagoons are an exceptional bonus to
the wastewater treatment process. One lagoon is aerated (shown above) and the other is not.
The flow comes into the lagoons, each 180 feet by 135 feet by 10 feet, and is
retained for at least 64 hours. The lagoons allow the plant to discharge no
chlorine residual to the Normanskill Creek when the chlorinator is in
operation. The chlorine kills any potential fecal coliforms within the contact
tank but the residual dissipate while in the lagoons. By the time the effluent
leaves the plant the residual is usually zero and the plant doesn't have to
dechlorinate the effluent.. Also by keeping one of the lagoons aerated the
plant boosts the D.O. of the final effluent. These lagoons are very beneficial
to the system and nice to add to a system if space is available. The aerated
lagoon has been emptied and cleaned once in the past twenty years and the other
lagoon has never needed maintenance. The liners in the lagoons are
scheduled for replacement within the next two years. A parshall flume is
used to monitor the effluent flow from the plant to the creek.
