Composting System
Originally the system was run with sludge drying beds. Recently the facility
switched to a composting system. The sludge is pumped from the holding tanks
to a thickener . Here a polymer is added to
help further thicken the sludge. This is then mixed with yard waste and is
placed in a long channel.
The mixture of sludge and yard waste is moved by a rototiller down the channel. This rototiller
is mechanically operated and travels to the end of the channel and works it way
back to the beginning. While moving it mixes the pile and moves the pile
approximately twelve feet per day. After about 21 days the pile is furthered
cured for an additional 30 days to meet regulations. The finished product is
used by the town to provide daily cover to it's landfill. The town is
considering screening the yard waste that is mixed with the compost. This will
allow them to be able to produce a finer end product that may have some
economic value. .
