Chlorine Contact Tanks
The SPDES permit requires the facility to chlorinate between May 15 and
September 15. The contact tank (40 feet by 29 feet by 11 feet) is broken
into two sections which contain baffles to minimize short circuiting. The
hydraulic residence time within the tank is about 30 minutes. Each half has
five bends with a length to width ratio of 4. The facility uses liquid
chlorine which is then evaporated and sprayed by injection just before the flow
enters the tank. The plant has two chlorinators with a maximum overall
transfer capacity of 2000 lbs/day. When operating the chlorinators the
transfer rate is set at about 500 lbs/day. When not in use the chlorine is not
added but the flow still goes through the tank.
