In batch culture of microorganisms that have inducible enzymes, there will be two growth phases, one on glucose followed by one on the less common sugar. There is a brief delay while the needed enzymes are synthesized. In this applet, you can test permutations of concentrations of the two sugars, glucose and lactose. Usually the growth rate is faster with glucose, and you see the preference stated as how many times faster is the glucose growth rate. The simulation includes a small death rate when there is no growth.
