Environmental engineers find lots of pentoses in natural environments and in wastes that have plant materials such as undigested foods and paper. Other engineers are concerned with using cellulose as a chemical feedstock to make fuel alcohol or other chemicals. Still other engineers use wood as a construction material. Knowing something about pentoses helps in understanding waste treatment, bioconversion of cellulosic materials, and deterioration of wood.
