Human growth hormone
Human growth hormone (HGH) is a protein consisting of 191 amino
acids and has a molecular weight of 21,700. Its main uses are effective
treatment of hypopituitary dwarfism and treatment of disorders like
bone fractures, burns and bleeding ulcers. It is commercially sold as
protropin at a price of $800/gm. In 1989, it has been expressed
in E. coli at high levels using two vectors, pompa-HGH and
Pclodf13-derived bacteriocin release protein (BRP). Mature and
properly folded HGH is expressed and released in the culture medium
and purified into its active form using reverse-phase HPLC.
