Plates for an exchanger

Plates for an exchanger have indentations to encourage more turbulent flow across them to make films thinner to promote better heat transfer. The headers for feeding and removing the fluids pass through all the plates, but the inappropriate headers are blocked off on a plate. The sketch shows plates that are supported by rods that pass through holes in the top and bottom, but plates are often designed with ears on the sides that slide on rods that are external to the plates. Between each plate is a gasket. Plates for the two fluids alternate.

The sketch and photo are from an old catalog from American Heat Reclaiming Co., New York, NY. These plates have the bars that align them in the center. Other plates can have ears to hang on bars at the sides.
