Cooling Towers


Most chemical plants have one or more cooling towers that exchange heat to the atmosphere from water used in the plant so that it can be recycled. The following sketch is from  the web page for OBR.
 

These towers can be made of wood or some other construction material. Plant water trickles down and contacts air. The air contact causes direct cooling and evaporative cooling.

For great heat loads, you might need something like the cooling towers used at the 3-mile Island Nuclear Plant.
