What does the term phase mean?

The term phase refers to whether a substance is present in the liquid, gas (or vapor in the case of water) or solid state. A two phase system would be one which a substance would be simultaneously present as more than one state. In the case of boiler water it was found as both a liquid and a vapor (gas).
