Areal Precipitation Measurement
(for all you amateur hydrologists out there, that's measuring the average amount of precipation that has fallen in an area)

Thiessen polygon method
isohyetal method
Both the Thiessen polygon method and the isohyetal method provide a more accurate assessment of the average areal precipitation, but these methods will most likely require a bit of time, a ruler, and some graph paper. The arithmetic average should be used for estimation only.
