Rules

"Rules have two parts--a premise and a conclusion."

A conclusion, then, can be one of two types, either hard or soft. "IF process temperature is increasing rapidly, THEN increase flow rate of cooling water", is an example of a hard rule. "IF the dissolved oxygen concentration is above 4 ppm, THEN you have a 70 per cent basis for reducing air flow", is an example of a soft rule. For this soft rule more rules are needed because of the organic loading.
