Magnetic Levitation

A recent development in magnetic mixing of small bioreactors comes from TC Tech Corporation. 5475 Pioneer Creek Drive, Maple Plain, MN 55359. Using superconductivy, a disposable impeller is actually levitated within the bag. That means no seals, bearings or other potential areas of entrapment within the mixing vessel, and no mixing shaft enters the vessel.

From their web page:

"For the first time, the classic stirred mixing tank is available as a disposable unit. The LevTech DB-200 offers the efficiency and speed of conventional stainless steel mixing in disposable bags with a disposable levitating impeller. The DB-200 uses superconductive materials to levitate and spin a disposable impeller inside single-use bags. Benefits of this technology include reduction in cleaning & validation costs, elimination of cross-contamination risks, capital aviodance, and reduced COGS."
