This computer simulation in Java has both an arithmetic plot and a logarithmic plot. We are most interested in very low concentrations because we are attempting to kill ALL of the organisms. However, you can't read concentrations on the arithmetic plot with any accuracy as the line approaches the ordinate (y-axis scale). With a logarithmic plot, it is easy to read low concentrations. When there is less than one organism present, the message converts to what fraction or what probability of contamination. For example, 0.1 organisms means that of ten samples, one would have an organism present. If there are ten bioreactors, one would be contaminated. Of course, statistics apply. We strive for low numbers so that the chance of contamination is perhaps one in a thousand or one in ten thousand.
