Disinfection
Introduction
Removing the health hazard of pathogenic organisms is called
disinfection. One kind of disinfection is sterilization,
or the elimination of all life. Common methods of sterilization are
heating, irradiating, and treating with chemicals. Even though
germicidal chemicals can be costly, economics favor chemical
treatment of drinking water over heat or irradiation because energy
costs are very high for large volumes of water.
