Assays and Sensors
Few bioprocess variables are easy to monitor. The traditional ones available
are pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration. Others measurements
provide such valuable information that elaborate analytical procedures may be
justified, e.g., DNA content and specific enzyme concentrations. Ammonium
ion concentration is particularly interesting in a process when this ion is
the sole source of nitrogen. Monitoring ammonium ion concentration rapidly
enough for its control in a bioreactor is difficult. Specific ion electrodes
exist for rapid measurement of ammonium but are poorly suited for continuous
monitoring. The measurement system has to supply an accurate and precise
signal with minimal dead time, rapid response, and extended reliability.
