Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Cellulose

A separate bioprocess is required to make the enzymes. This step takes several days and is easily contaminated, thus high-technology, aseptic techniques are required.

When the feedstock has excellent pretreatment and the dosage of enzymes is high, hydrolysis yield approaches 100% at extended times. Practical amounts of enzyme and reasonable process times reach only about 90%. When the feedstock required to make the enzyme is factored in, the yield by enzymatic hydrolysis is roughly 80% of the theoretical available fermentable sugar.
