ELMIRA, N.Y WATER WORKS CO. (1861)

The first known aerator on an American water supply was a part of works built between 1860 and 1861 by the Elmira, N.Y. Water Works Company. In this process, water from an impounding reservoir was admitted to a distributing reservoir through a fountain discharging trough which contained a cluster of holes for aerating and purifying.
