Background

Professor Vollen is a Registered Architect and an award winning researcher focused on emerging material technologies and bio-analytic design strategies, specifically the integration of energy per-formative building envelopes, dynamic and environmental simulation, and digital fabrication as it pertains to climate related design.

Prior to joining RPI, Vollen was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona working in the Emerging Material Technologies Research Group focusing on next generation building design strategies based on integration of emerging technical and material systems. Vollen is the Program Director for the M. Arch II Environmental Parametrics: Performance Design of the Built Ecology post professional degree program. Vollen is a consulting principal with Merge Architecure Studio which specializes in high perormance design and consulting for the built environment. Vollen co-founded Binary Design with Dale Clifford serving as a principal for the collaborative practice focusing on energy effective architecture and emerging material processes.

Research Interests

Mr. Vollen is currently directing interdisciplinary sponsored research related to technical systems inetgration in the building environment, building systems, lighting, energy efficiency, environmental engineering and emerging material technologies.
