Resumes
What is a Resume?
Your resume is a brief overview of your background including your education, relevant experience and qualifications. It is the most important document you will use in your job search and is often an employer’s first introduction to you. Think of your resume as a marketing device with one primary desired outcome: to get you an interview! Look to our Preparing Your Resume handout for more details.
When Should You Use a Resume?
Resumes are used to apply directly for open positions and to query potential openings. Here are the three ways you may use your resume through JobLink, the CCPD’s online recruiting and job posting system:
- OCR: You will use your resume during On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) at Rensselaer to request to be considered for On-Campus interviews. OCR interviews take place in the Fall and Spring semesters for students seeking full-time, co-op and summer internships. Log into your JobLink account and post at least one copy of your resume online. Review all OCR openings and submit your resume to each employer you would like an interview with. To be considered for OCR opportunities, please pay close attention to all resume submission and interview sign-up deadlines. You will be contacted by the employer if you have been pre-selected for an on-campus interview.
- Open Jobs: The CCPD receives open jobs year-round and posts them in JobLink. Many employers who are unable to travel to campus will post open jobs here. To be considered for these openings, read each job posting carefully and apply according to the directions provided.
- CCPD Resume Books: Designate one resume in JobLink as your “Primary Resume” and we will automatically include your resume in our CCPD Resume Books made available to registered employers. Remember to keep your resume current old or dated resumes found in the CCPD Resume Books are overlooked by employers!
Writing Your First Resume
First, begin by analyzing your skills, knowledge and accomplishments. Write a rough draft and use our resume samples to help guide you. Next, bring a copy of your resume to the CCPD during regularly scheduled Walk-in Hours to have a Career Counselor review it with you.
How Often Should You Update Your Resume?
At the very least, update your resume at the beginning of each semester. You should also update your resume any time your contact information changes or the content needs to be refreshed (GPA change, new activity added, shift in job responsibilities, etc).
