Recruiting Overview

The Career Development Center (CDC) at Rensselaer provides several services through which you can attract and hire students to meet your employment needs. Our staff prides itself on providing outstanding services for employers and seeks partnerships with those who are interested in providing enriching and challenging career and work experiences for our students.

We are also proud to be affiliated with NACElink, a web-based application suite produced by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (a professional association that has been serving college career services and employment professionals for nearly half a century) and DirectEmployers Association.

Graduating Student Services (GSS)

If you are seeking highly qualified full-time employees, you will be interested in our Graduating Student Services (GSS). Our Graduating Student Services staff coordinates the interview and referral process for all students at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Rensselaer's classes are conducted on a semester calendar, therefore, students are available for employment after graduation in May, August or December. Candidates may be recruited from a wide variety of technically oriented disciplines from the Schools of Architecture, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Science and Information Technology. On-campus interviews take place in both the fall and spring semesters.

Recruiting Options for GSS: You have the choice of recruiting students on campus (Preselect or Open Schedule Interviews) or if you are unable to visit campus, you may take advantage of Rensselaer's Job Listing Service.

Cooperative Education Program (Co-op)

If you have short-term projects and would like to bring pre-professionals into your organization that you can evaluate for later full-time employment, you should consider our Cooperative Education Program (Co-op). Rensselaer operates a comprehensive Co-op Program that is centralized in the Career Development Center. Students from all disciplines may participate in the program, however, graduate students must first obtain permission from their faculty advisor. Undergraduate co-op students are required to work a minimum of two terms, one of which must be a semester. Normally, these terms are scheduled consecutively, from January to August or June to December. Because many co-op students graduate a semester late, it is not uncommon for co-ops to work an additional term, usually a summer. In two majors, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, some students may find it necessary to work three terms consecutively (January to December) because of the scheduling of courses. Graduate students have the option of working one term (summer or semester) or more up to one calendar year.

Recruiting Options for Co-op: Most employers interested in hiring co-op students interview prospective candidates on campus or preselect candidates in advance. However, you may also request resumes electronically through our Job Listing Service and then conduct interviews by phone or at your business site.

Meet the Co-op Ambassadors!

Summer Employment Services

If you have short-term projects and would like to bring pre-professionals into your organization that you can evaluate for later full-time employment, you should consider our Summer Employment Services. You may recruit students from all majors and degree levels for summer internships in your organization.

Recruiting Options for Summer Employment: You may interview students on campus for summer positions (Preselect and Open Schedules) or post a job through our Job Listing Service.  Be certain to include important details for each job, including the academic majors that are most relevant, degree/class level(s) and citizenship.

Ethics and Responsibility in Recruiting: Rensselaer adheres to Principles for Professional Conduct and requires that all students who participate in recruiting activities abide by these standards. We expect the same professionalism from our employers. Recruiters must treat all student information, including resumes and transcripts, as strictly confidential. All interviewers should be trained to ask only those questions that are legal and appropriate. In addition, serving alcohol should not be a part of the recruitment process. All activities, including, but not limited to informational meetings and presentations, should be alcohol free. You are encouraged to review the Principles for Employment Professionals developed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
