Co-op Information for Chemistry Majors
Cooperative Education programs provide students with the experience of working in the chemical or related industries (typically for six months; a summer and one semester) while completing the chemistry curriculum. The best time for the co-op assignment for Chemistry majors is the first semester of senior year, since this semester consists primarily of only elective courses that can be distributed over other semesters. Students may take an earlier co-op assignment, postponing required courses to the senior year, but then they must plan carefully to accommodate prerequisites, and run the risk of scheduling problems. Students are urged to discuss their plans with their advisor.
Under certain circumstances, students may receive up to 4 credits for work related to co-op experience. In order to obtain credit, the student must submit a proposal that outlines the nature of the experience for approval by the advisor before the assignment is undertaken. At the end of the assignment, the student can register for the approved number of credits (for the course CHEM-2930) and submit a report.
