| Co-op Information for Biochemistry & Biophysics Majors The cooperative education program provides a Biochemistry & Biophysics student with the experience of working in an industrial or governmental research laboratory, in a field of biotechnology or bioscience related to medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, or the environment. A co-op is not required but is recommended for students planning research careers. A co-op provides valuable work experience that can help a student define his/her career goals while enhancing opportunities for ultimate employment. The flexibility of the BCBP curriculum facilitates fitting in a co-op. The best time for the co-op assignment for most students is the fall semester of the senior year, including the preceeding summer. By the end of the junior year, most required courses have been completed and needed expertise obtained. The scheduling of a co-op should be discussed with the student's advisor. A student may receive up to 4 credits for a co-op experience related to biochemistry and/or biophysics through the course BCBP 2930 (Out-of-Classroom Experience in Biochemistry Biophysics). A written proposal should be submitted to a faculty member for approval prior to undertaking the co-op assignment. In the semester following the co-op, the student should register for the agreed number of credits and submit a final written report. updated 7/6/05 |
