Alumni Pathways Program
Pathways is a professional networking program open to all Rensselaer students and designed to assist in exploring various career fields. Through Pathways, Rensselaer students are matched with alumni for short, informational visits at the alumnus/a's place of employment and when in-person visits are not possible, students are encouraged to contact alumni mentors by telephone or e-mail when appropriate.
How Do Pathways Visits Benefit Students?
"Shadowing" visits allow students to spend time with experienced alumni, view actual work environments and become further aware of their own career goals and interests.
How Do Pathways Visits Benefit Alumni?
- Alumni become directly involved in the education of Rensselaer students
- Pathways volunteering offers a great way to meet potential candidates for summer, co-op and permanent employment
- To learn more about the role of a mentor, read About Mentoring.
How Does the Program Work?
- Alumni register with RenSource and electronically submit background profiles.
- Students preview alumni profiles and select a mentor based on shared interests, field or industry of choice, a particular company of interest and/or geographic preference.
- Students are sent contact information about the mentor they've selected and alumni mentors receive notification they've been linked with a Rensselaer student along with the student's name and major.
What Are Pathways Visits Like?
The visits are as unique as the alumni who sponsor them. However, some of the activities Pathways mentors have selected in the past include:
- A discussion about your background including: degrees received, special training and current job responsibilities;
- A tour of your office and/or the organization;
- Having students attend regularly scheduled meetings with other staff or clients (when appropriate).
