This Thursday, May 22nd , is the date of the 2003 GHI Corporate Challenge. Held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, this 3.5-mile race is an affiliate to the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge open to teams of employees from educational institutions, corporations, businesses, and financial institutions. Participating companies use the event as a platform to provide health and fitness opportunities in the work place while promoting goodwill and camaraderie among employees.
The series includes 13 locations in the US as well as three overseas events. Winning Male, Female and Mixed Teams from each of the 16 races are invited to participate in the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge Championship, held in New York City on Park Avenue in October. In 1997 the Rensselaer female team consisting of Cindy Novak, Ginny Moore and Daniele Cherniak WON the Albany competition. They went on to place 7th out of a field of 57 women's teams in the national championship.
Rensselaer has a team of 43 people competing this year. Last years team of 39 won the award for the Largest Participation Award in the corporate category based on annual revenue. With 43 members this year, Rensselaer could be a good bet for a repeat!
The Office of Human Resources, the Office of Health Education and Networking and Telecommunications arranged the funding for the event so that participants could represent Rensselaer in style. Jill Evans, from the School of Engineering, designed team t-shirts this year and will be submitted for the "Best of" Team T-shirt Contest. Rensselaer won that award last year and is looking for a repeat.
The race kicks off on Madison Avenue at the State Museum at 6:25pm. All Rensselaer employees are encouraged to come out and support the team.
