Eddie Ade Knowles, Vice President for Student Life, is pleased to announce that Professor Harry McLaughlin has been selected as this year's recipient of the David M. Darrin Counseling Award.
This award was established by David M. Darrin '40, to recognize a faculty member who has made an unusual contribution in the counseling of undergraduate students, generously sharing time and talents with them, and demonstrating special concern for their welfare in and out of the classroom. The selection of the award recipient is made by Phalanx, the student leadership honorary society, based on nominations received from an open solicitation to the campus earlier this spring. The Darrin Award will be presented to Professor McLaughlin at Commencement on May 21st.
This year's winner, Professor McLaughlin has impacted many students, whether in his role as a professor or an advisor. To fully appreciate Professor McLaughlin's impact, it is just easier to share some quotes from his nominators:
"I see Prof. McLaughlin serve as the prime example of what an advisor should be. He is responsive toward and aware of students' concerns and situations. He encourages students to learn and take ownership of their education."
"Professor McLaughlin has also offered himself to all of his students in many ways, he has offered to actively go out and help them find jobs, internships or to visit other institutions to do research. He has spent hours with students designing schedules that will meet their needs, many of which include independent studies with him, when there is no course on a topic. He has helped students work through personal problems and problems with other professors."
"Of all my time at RPI, I have never seen an advisor live up to the duties of that job other than Prof. McLaughlin. He treats all of his students, many of whom become his de-facto advisees, with great care, compassion and concern. He has consistently spent hours of his personal time helping students above and beyond the call of duty."
