Improving Reliability and Performance of Electric Power Grids by Using High Performance Computing

Efficient operation and management of the electric power grid is vitally important for the society. Operating of electric power systems requires solutions of several large-scale simulation and modeling problems and high performance computing is a natural tool for solving them. This talk will discuss mathematical problems whose solutions are important for reliability and performance of electric generation, transmission, and can be improved by using high performance computing.

Biography

Eugene A. Feinberg received MS in Applied Mathematics and Computer Engineering from Moscow University of Transportation in 1976 and Ph.D. in Probability and Statistics from Vilnius University, Lithuania, in 1979. Between 1976 and 1988 he held research and faculty positions in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Moscow University of Transportation. After holding a one-year visiting faculty position at Yale University in 1988-89, he joined Stony Brook University, where he is currently Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. His research interests include stochastic models of operations research, Markov Decision Processes, and industrial applications of Operations Research and Statistics. He has published more that 60 papers and edited the Handbook on Markov Decision Processes. His research is partially supported by the National Science Foundation, New York Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research, and private industry. He has served as a Council Member of the INFORMS Applied Probability Society and he is currently an associate editor for Mathematics of Operations Research and for Mathematical Methods of Operations Research. Since 1993, he has directed several research and development projects funded by the natural gas and electric utility industry. Since 1999, he has been working on electric load forecasting problems. He has developed several accurate electric load forecasting methods and software that are being used by the industry.
