The Graduate Educational Program

Master’s Programs in Engineering   Master’s degrees are offered in a broad range of engineering fields. The two basic options are the Master of Engineering and Master of Science degrees. Both degree programs focus on engineering fundamentals at advanced levels, and both include significant elective opportunities that permit the student to individualize his or her study plan. Either program provides an excellent basis for further graduate work in engineering. There is no foreign language requirement for either degree.

Master of Engineering   This degree program is intended primarily as preparation for professional practice. Admission to the program is based on demonstration by the student of adequate preparation and competence. Applications for admission should be transmitted directly to Graduate Services. A thesis is not required for this degree.

Master of Science   The Master of Science program encompasses diverse educational needs, and this plan of study is normally taken by those who intend to get a Ph.D. degree. Admission requires only a baccalaureate degree in an area appropriate to the individual’s proposed plan of study, not necessarily an engineering degree. However, for students who do not have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, some additional course work not qualifying for graduate credit may be required, depending on the individual’s background. A thesis is required by several departments.

Doctoral Programs   Programs leading to the degrees of Doctor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are offered. The doctoral student formally affiliates with the department where activities most closely relate to his or her advanced study goals. However, the range of inquiry may cut across department and school lines, so that research opportunities are extremely broad, and highly individualized programs can be pursued. There is no foreign language requirement for either degree.

Doctor of Engineering   The Doctor of Engineering program is characterized by the special nature of the thesis. The student, working in concert with an adviser, proposes an engineering problem of substance and develops a solution. The student must demonstrate ability to apply scientific principles to meet engineering needs, with due regard to social and economic factors and within a reasonable time constraint. The presentation and defense of his or her conclusions before the student’s doctoral committee and guests serves as the final examination for the degree.

Doctor of Philosophy   The Doctor of Philosophy program is the traditional degree with a thesis that involves substantial original research. The program follows the general rules of the Graduate School.
