| Center for Infrastructure and Transportation Studies
Director George F. List The Center for Infrastructure and Transportation Studies (CITS) provides a focal point for campus research addressing the worlds infrastructure and transportation needs. CITS also assists in coordinating all related pedagogical initiatives. More than 30 faculty over 15 departments and each of Rensselaers five schools participate from nearly every facet of the campus. The Centers research program focuses on five themes: intelligent transportation systems, information technology development, deployment and application, network analysis and control, asset management, and advanced materials with emphasis on technological innovation. Each aspect of the life cycle for infrastructure and transportation systems is of interest: planning, analysis, design, maintenance, operation, preservation, restoration, and renewal. Common infrastructure focal points are roadways, bridges, buildings, pipelines, and power distribution networks. Projects currently under way include ITS impact assessment for border crossing facilities, investment planning for multimodal freight networks, rural ITS toolboxes, real-time traffic control systems, computer-aided decision support systems for environmental impact assessment, transit-focused routing assistants, pipeline network management systems, advanced concrete technologies, composite material-based bridge design, and advanced snowplow design. The pedagogical activities include professional capacity building in the areas of intelligent transportation systems and asset management. Affiliated Faculty A. Balfour, D. Berg, F. Bronet, J.
