Receiving and Reading Mail

To read your mail, enter
mail
Mail will then display a listing of all the messages you have waiting. At the bottom of the list will appear an ampersand (&) which is the mail prompt. For example:

N 2 lee Wed Aug 22 13:46 32/1131 ''meeting''}
\end{alltt}

When mail lists the messages you have, each line in the listing shows you


HINT: You can get a list of commands by entering a question mark (?) at the & prompt.


Reading a Message

To read a message, enter its number after the & prompt, like this:

& 1
If the message contains more than 22 lines, the Mail system will display the first screenful of text and print this message at the bottom of the screen:

{\tt ---More---}
\end{alltt}
Press the SPACE BAR to see the next screen of the message; press Return to see the next line. If you are in the middle of a long message and you want to stop looking at it and return to the mail system, type
q
at the ``More'' prompt.

To read your next mail message, press Return at the & prompt.

Deleting a Message

To delete a message you just read, type
d
at the & prompt. If you wish to delete a particular message, enter a d and the message number. If you want to delete a range of messages, or several messages, enter a d and the range. For example, to delete messages 2 through 5, you can type:
d 2-5
while if you wish to delete only messages 2, 3, and 5, you can type:
d 2 3 5

Quitting

When you're done reading your messages, you can enter

q
to leave the Mail system. Read section 7 Leaving the Mail System on page [*] to learn more specifics about the different ways you can store mail and exit the Mail system.
