Controlling Windows

You may control the various windows on your screen by either using the Window menu, or by clicking on the various icons in the window's titlebar. To see the Window menu, press and hold the right mouse button while the pointer is on the desired window's titlebar. Or, left-click on the ``minus-sign" icon in the upper left corner of the desired window to make the Window menu appear and keep the menu open. Use the following menu options to control the window:

• Minimize (Iconify): Iconifies the window. You can reduce any window into an icon at any time, and then enlarge it back to full-size when you need it again. You may find this especially useful if you are running a program or an application inside a window but don't need to view that window for a while, or if you simply want to reduce the visual clutter on your workstation screen. (Please note that even if you iconify the window, any processes or applications which you may have running within that window will not terminate.)

  You may also iconify a window by positioning the mouse cursor over the small ``dot" icon in the window's titlebar, and then clicking the left mouse button. An icon of that window will appear in the upper left corner of the workstation screen. (Again, iconifying the window will not terminate any processes you have running.)

  To make the window reappear, move the mouse pointer onto the appropriate icon, and rapidly double-click the left mouse button. The window will reappear in its original size. Note that if you don't double-click rapidly enough, a pop-up menu will appear. In this case, left-click on the Restore size menu option, described below, to bring back the window.

• Restore size: Changes (restores) the window back to its previous size.
• Maximize (Full size): Expands the window to the full size of your screen. (Use Restore Size to return it to its previous size.)

  You can also maximize a window by left-clicking on the square button in the window's upper right corner. To restore the window's original size, left-click on the same square button a second time.

• Move: Allows you to move the window to another location on your screen by moving the mouse. Click the left mouse button when you've moved the window to the desired location. You may also move a window by positioning the cursor over the window's titlebar, pressing and holding down the left mouse button, and then dragging the window to another location on the screen.
• Resize: Allows you to make a window larger or smaller by moving the mouse. When you select Resize, the mouse pointer changes into a small set of crosshairs, and a small box containing the window's size will appear on the screen. Move the mouse around, and watch the cursor change into either a small ``arrow-and-line" or right-angle ``corner" shape. As you do this, you should see the window's outline stretch and shrink accordingly. When you have resized the window as you wish, click the left mouse button, and the window will redraw.

  You may also use the ``minimize" and ``maximize" icons on each window's titlebar to resize the window; click on the small ``dot" icon in the upper right corner of the window to iconify the window, or the ``square" icon to enlarge the window to fill the entire computer screen.

• Raise: Brings a window to the top of all the other windows overlapping it.
• Lower: Sends the window behind all the other windows displayed.
• Refresh: Redraws the window.
• Close (Quit): Closes (exits) the active window. You can also close a window by double clicking on the ``minus sign" icon in the upper left corner of the window.
