Getting More Information

ACS Documentation

Academic Computing Services (ACS) has a number of Memos and Quick Studies available. For more information on general UNIX commands, please refer to Memo RPI.113, Using UNIX: The Rensselaer Computing System. You might also find RPI.114, Sharing Files in RCS UNIX, useful.

For a complete list of ACS-written documents, including Memos and Quick Studies, please refer to the RCS file /campus/doc/acs.memos/how-to-use, or access the information via RPInfo. To do this, click on the Academic Computing Services link from the main RPInfo homepage, and then click on the ACS documentation link from the resulting ACS homepage. The Memos and Quick Studies, many of which are available in both HTML and PDF formats, are listed both numerically and by subject.

Another good way to keep up with computing improvements and changes, as well as lab and consulting hours and other useful information is to read the CIS newsletter, The Kiosk, available free-of-charge either by subscription or at the VCC and CII Help Desk locations. To subscribe, send your subscription request, along with your name, on-campus or off-campus address, and Rensselaer affiliation via electronic mail to kiosk-subscribe@rpi.edu.

UNIX On-Line Help

UNIX also has on-line help, called man pages. To check for additional help on a specific topic, enter a command similar to the following from a UNIX window, replacing topic with the actual topic you wish to review:

man topic

And for more information about man pages, you can enter the following command from a UNIX window:

man man
