Using the xlock Utility

xlock, a terminal-locking utility with screensaver capabilities, allows you to lock an RCS computer and safely leave it unattended for short periods of time without having to exit the current session. Once started, xlock will act as a screensaver and will also prevent any use of the terminal until you unlock it.

Please note that the current version of xlock has been modified to prevent you from locking RCS workstations for long periods of time. After twenty minutes of being locked, a button will appear on the locked screen which, when chosen, allows anyone to logout your current session. If another user does not logout your session, xlock will automatically logout your current session after an hour.

To run the current version of xlock, enter the following command from a UNIX prompt:

xlock

xlock includes roughly 50 different screensavers. If run with no command line options, xlock will default to a random screensaver.

To unlock your session, press any key, then enter your password in response to the system prompt.

For help in using xlock, use the command xlock -help.
