COMSOL Installation Instructions

Important:

Before you can install COMSOL you must obtain permission from your course instructor and agree to the terms of the COMSOL License Agreement (step 9 below). Agreeing to the terms of the COMSOL License Agreement gives you the permission necessary to access the COMSOL installation files through the network.

Remember:

Installing COMSOL 5.2a on a computer with Windows 10, 8.1, or 7

If you are OFF campus, the VPN needs to be up and running before attempting to install or run the program!

Installing the application:

  1. On your keyboard, hold down the Windows key and press R, this will open a Run window on your screen.
  2. In the Run window, type in explorer and hit enter, this will open File Explorer.
  3. In File Explorer, enter the following information into the Address bar at the top of the window: \\arc-fs4.win.rpi.edu\software\comsol\5.2a\Windows. You may be prompted to enter your RCS UserID. Please type in your RCS UserID preceded by win\ and your RCS password. For example, if the RCS UserID is smithj, then enter win\smithj for the user name.
  4. Double-click on the COMSOL52a_win icon to start the installer.
  5. Click Run at the Open File security warning.
  6. Click Yes at the User Account Control message. You might be prompted to enter your RCS UserID. Please type in your RCS UserID preceded by win\ and your RCS password. For example, if the RCS UserID is smithj, then enter win\smithj for the user name.
  7. The COMSOL installer will start. Select your prefered installation language and click Next.
  8. In the next window, select the top item: New COMSOL 5.2a Installation.
  9. The next screen deals with software licensing.
    1. Read the COMSOL Software License Agreement Version 5.2a and then select I accept the terms of the license agreement and understand and ackowledge that with this acceptance all other terms are rejected.
    2. On the same screen, under License Information, click on the down arrow next to License format and select < port number > @ < host name > .
      1. For the Port number and Host nametype in the information that corresponds to your Professor:
        • Scarton
          • Port number: 1718
          • Host name: licsrvr8.arc.rpi.edu
        • Plawsky
          • Port number: 1718
          • Host name: licsrvr22.arc.rpi.edu
        • Shankar
          • Port number: 1718
          • Host name:: licsrvr23.arc.rpi.edu
      2. Type in your name in the Name field and type in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Company field. Click Next.
  10. In the Products window, under Select products to install uncheck License Manager and click Next.
  11. In the Options window, accept the defaults and click Next.
  12. At the next window, confirm that your selected items are listed and then click Install.
  13. A message for COMSOL 5.2a Update 3 is displayed, click Next.
  14. At the next window, click Install.
  15. When the installation has completed, click Close to exit the installer.

Installing COMSOL 4.2a on a Mac

If you are OFF campus, the VPN needs to be up and running before attempting to install or run the program!

Installing the software:

  1. In the Finder, click on the Go menu and then click Connect to Server...
  2. In the Connect To Server dialog box, click smb://arc-fs4.win.rpi.edu/software and click Connect.
  3. In the next windows, type in your win\RCS UserID for Name and your RCS Password for password. For example, if the RCS UserID is smithj, then enter win\smithj for the user name.
  4. Make sure Registered User is selected and then click Connect. For Workgroup/Domain, accept the default. A new drive will be mounted called software.
  5. Go to the Finder and open the software drive.
  6. Open the following folders: comsol > 4.2a
  7. Double-click the COMSOL Installer icon to launch the installer. You might be prompted for a username and password. It will be your computer’s user name and password not your RCS ones! Type them and then click OK.
  8. In the next screen, select the top item New Comsol 4.2a Installation.
  9. In the License Screen there are 3 sub-screens:
    1. Select I accept the terms of the license agreement.
    2. For the License format, click on the dropdown menu and select: < port number > @ < host name >. For the Port number type in: 1725 and for the Host name type in: licsrvr7.arc.rpi.edu.
    3. Type in your name and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Name and Company fields respectively. Then click Next.
  10. In the Platforms screen, accept the default Intel (32-bit) or select Intel 64-bit if appropriate and then click Next.
  11. For the Features screen, uncheck the License Manager (at the bottom of the list) and any feature not needed in your course according to your instructor. For the Destination Folder, accept the default or click on Browse to select a different location and then click Next. Please note COMSOL does not work if the paths to the COMSOL folder, or the name of the COMSOL folder itself, contains spaces.
  12. In the Options window, You may accept the default.
  13. In the next window, confirm that your selected items are listed and then click Install.
  14. Wait until the installation completes successfully. To launch the standalone Comsol Multiphysics, run the COMSOL Multiphysics application in the comsol42a folder. For the script, run the COMSOL Script from the comsol42a folder.
  15. Please disconnect the smb://arcvfs.arc.rpi.edu/arc/software drive so others can access the files. Right-click on the software drive and select Eject “Software”.
