CODE OF ETHICS
for Tutors and Tutees
-
1. A tutor, whether paid or volunteer, is considered to work for The Learning Center if, and only if, he/she has filed an application for the current semester, signed the declaration that he/she understands and will abide by the rules unter which the tutoring program operates and has attended a tutor training session after 28 August, 1995.
-
2. A tutee is considered to be receiving tutoring from The Learning Center only if he/she has filled out a Tutor Request form for the current semester and signed their agreement to abide by the procedures stated on its reverse side.
-
3. Tutors are expected to create an atmosphere conducive to learning and tutees are expected to make every reasonable attempt to learn.
-
4. Both the tutor and tutee(s) must respect the privacy and confidentiality of the tutoring relationship. Do not divulge the identity of any tutees to anyone except a member of the staff of The Learning Center. Tutors should not reveal the confidences disclosed to them to anyone including the staff of The Learning Center unless the tutee gives permission. Similarly, in group sessions, tutees should not reveal the identities of other group members (unless all individuals decide that this is acceptable) nor anything of a personal nature which transpires during a session.
-
5. Be Honest. For the tutor, if you are unsure of the material or are stuck, look up the answer or seek assistance. Do not be afraid to say that you do not know the answer. For the tutee, do not say you understand when you don't or that you have tried when you haven't.
-
6. Tutors are expected to encourage tutees to become independent learners. They work with the tutee, not for him/her. Tutors may discuss assignments with their tutees and even suggest study techniques that may help in completing them, but under no circumstances are tutors to actually do for the tutee projects, homework assignments, or papers.
-
7. Tutors should, whenever possible, help the tutee to develop and reinforce necessary study skills. To this end, the tutor may use various instructional strategies and techniques, or additional resources that may be helpful in assisting tutee to master course and personal objectives. Tutees should make every attempt to try to implement the tutor's suggestions.
-
8. Tutors are expected to assist tutees in realizing their full potential without threat or embarrassment. Avoid insulting or derogatory remarks to the tutee about his performance during a session and about the instructional program or individual instructors. Tutees must make every reasonable attempt to improve their own self image and to develop a positive approach to their education.
-
9. Tutoring may take place in any public site on campus. Dorm rooms, apartments, fraternity or sorority houses or other locations with restricted entry are not considered to be public sites.
-
10. Behavior which is deemed to be either discriminatory or harassing, whatever its basis, including, but not limited to, gender, race, ethnicity, religious or sexual preference, age, class or major, will not be tolerated by The Learning Center.
VIOLATIONS OF THE ETHICAL CODE GIVEN ABOVE MAY RESULT IN YOUR TERMINATION AS A TUTOR FOR, OR THE CANCELLATION OF YOUR RIGHT TO RECEIVE TUTORING FROM, THE LEARNING CENTER. SUPERVISING TUTOR WILL RANDOMLY VISIT SCHEDULED TUTORING SESSIONS TO ENSURE ADHERENCE TO THIS CODE
