Part 1: In small groups, use appropriate formal and informal language to role-play similar conversations for these three situations. Include body language. Then perform your best scene for the class.

Part II: Some social occasions celebrate special events. Here are some examples of phrases of congratulations that are appropriate to these situations. The most common response is "Thank you."

Phrases of Congratulations (starting with formal versions and moving to informal versions)

Here are some examples of compliments used in social situations.

• This is the nicest apartment!
• You have a beautiful house!
• I like your furniture (new dress, etc.).
• This soup/salad  (is, looks, tastes) wonderful/delicious.
• What a (good idea, great dessert)!
