Application Deadlines            Decision Notification
Early Decision I (ED I): November 1 December 5
Accelerated Programs: November 1 Early April
Early Decision II (ED II): December 15 January 16
Regular Decision: January 15 March 14

Early Decision (Binding)

If Rensselaer is your top-choice school, Early Decision (ED) is a great option for you. You may apply to other colleges, but you may have only one ED application pending at any time. There are many benefits to applying for ED. In addition to earlier notification of your admission decision, you will also receive an earlier financial aid package. Knowing early on that you have already been accepted into your top-choice college can reduce the anxiety and stress of the college application process.

Rensselaer offers a second round of Early Decision (ED II) that allows you to apply at a later date but with the same benefits and commitments of Early Decision.

If admitted under ED I or ED II, you are obliged to enroll at Rensselaer, as long as your scholarship meets your need.  Rensselaer requires a nonrefundable deposit. Immediately upon acceptance of your ED admission offer, you must withdraw all other applications and make no subsequent applications.

Accelerated Programs

If you are applying to the Physician-Scientist, Management-Law, or Science, Technology, & Society-Law programs, final decisions are made in conjunction with the professional school. Notification of acceptance begins in early April.

Regular Decision

A Regular Decision application is the most common way to apply. Notification of acceptance is mailed March 14, and in most cases financial aid awards will accompany the decision letter.

January Admission

Many students are offered January admission to Rensselaer each year. This cohort of students is selected from the regular applicant pool, and will receive notification at the same time as other applicants. Students electing to enroll in January use the fall semester to pursue a wide range of interests; some elect to take courses at other colleges, some work, travel, volunteer or use the opportunity to “take a break” from their educational journey.

While students indicate a preference on their application regarding the start of their studies, the admissions committee is not always able to honor all preferences. For example, some students may indicate an interest in fall admission but may be offered a place in our January class. All students enrolling in January will be provided an award-winning orientation experience through the Office of the First Year Experience, and are quickly incorporated into the student community at the start of the spring semester.

Non-Traditional Admission

Rensselaer considers candidates who have completed all admission requirements and who wish to enter the university after the junior year of high school. Each situation is reviewed individually. Students are expected to have the same preparation as any accepted freshman. Candidates for early admission should follow the application deadlines stated above.
